The stadium was named after internationally renowned and West Indies batsman Hilary Angelo “Larry” Gomes, who helped the regional team to victory against Australia in 1984.

Larry Gomes Stadium was opened on 15th May 2001 and was one of the venues for the FIFA U17 Men World Cup finals in September of the same year. The stadium hosted teams and media from around the world including countries like Mali, Paraguay, Iran, and many others.

Trinidad and Tobago later hosted the FIFA U17 women’s World Cup in September of 2010.
